Marcel Wanders makes his Middle East debut

If anyone was wondering (and we certainly were) how Design Days Dubai 2016 was going to compete with October’s sensational Downtown Design amidst Dubai’s first Design Week, they’ve pulled the rabbit out of the hat with Marcel Wanders.

The acclaimed Dutch designer, Moooi co-founder, Yoo collaborator, brainchild of over 1,700 products, and suave silver fox will be making his Middle East debut at Design Days Dubai 2016 presenting his Personal Editions collection and opening the show with a keynote speech on March 14, ‘On the Crossroads between Art and Design’.

Held at The Venue, Downtown Dubai, the five-day event will showcase limited edition items and collectible furniture pieces from many international and regional designers.

Marcel’s Personal Editions collection is an ‘unrestricted playground’ of special, limited edition pieces that exist at the boundaries of the functional and non-functional, of art and design. From this visionary range of objet d’art, he will be showcasing one of his signature aesthetics, a contemporary take on the classic Dutch blue-and-white Delftware. Visitors to Design Days Dubai will see his 2006 One Minute Delft collection, a striking range of white porcelain vases, plates and figurines brushed with artistic blue strokes. Also on show will be his 2010 Bon Bon chair made crocheted rope  – ‘a phosphorescent fossil of a lacy hyper sponge’ – and his iconic Knotted Chair, one of just 20 limited edition designs from 2009. One of his latest projects, Rijks, Masters of the Golden Age, is a huge handcrafted art volume, and will join the show-stopping display.

“With this collection, in this region specifically, I wanted to include work that celebrates humankind and highlights durability, warmth and imperfection,” the designer told the Design Days Dubai team. “Handcrafted techniques and a sense of ornamentation dominate this collection and offer more surprise for both myself and those who experience it.”

In response, fair director Cyril Zammit said: “We are thrilled to welcome Marcel Wanders to this edition of Design Days Dubai. Marcel will be introducing some of his most iconic pieces to the Middle East and his presence will surely inspire some of our young design talents who will be taking part in the fair’s public programme and initiatives, such as Van Cleef & Arpel’s Middle East Emergent Designer Prize and Dubai Culture and d3’s Urban Commissions.”

The prolific designer counts over 1,700 projects for private clients and brands, including collaborations with Alessi, Baccarat, Boffi, Christofle, Flos, Kartell, KLM, Louis Vuitton, Magis, Moroso, Puma, Swarovski and Vista Alegra. His interior projects include quirky private residences, striking hotels and beautiful showrooms, such as those seen in Mondrian South Beach in Miami, Quasar in Istanbul and Villa Moda in Bahrain, plus the much anticipated Mondrian Doha, due to open later this year.

Design Days Dubai 2016 will be held between March 14 and 18 at The Venue, Downtown Dubai.
